Higher (University Level) Education in Iceland.

There are four levels in the system of education in Iceland - playschool, compulsory, upper secondary and higher, as in vogue other  Nordic Countries. Most institutions are funded by the state  of Iceland. There are  eight mostly state financed higher education or háskóli (lit. “high school”).institution  in the country. The University of Iceland opened in 1911, is the principal higher education institution in the country. Private and public universities both receive funding from the state.The academic year lasts from September to May, and is divided into two terms: autumn and spring.

Admissions
 Matriculatoin is necessary  for  undergration admission into university. However sufficient work experience may be considered  in some cases. The applicant having relevant experience in desired field of study need lesser  requirements for admission in the Vocational and technical courses. Registration for potential students takes place from May to June each year; however the application deadline for foreign students is earlier: March 15.

Tuition fees

 There is no tuition fee in state-run institutions, students only need pay registration fees. Private institutions, however, charge fees. Icelandic Student Loan Fund extend financial support, as per personal  financial condition situation, to all students. The student must begin to repay this money  two years after completing their study programme. Students from European Union or EEA-EFTA  are also eligible to apply for loans, if they have been working in their trade in the country for at least one year.
Registration Fees
The annual registration fee at  The University of Iceland is ISK 75,000  Spring semester registration fee for new students is ISK 55,000. The fee needs to be paid by a specific due date, generally a month after reception of the acceptance letter. Registration for studies is confirmed upon payment of the registration fee.The registration fee is non-refundable.Annual course registration for the upcoming academic year (fall and spring semesters) takes place in March each year. All university students must register during the annual registration period, including graduate students.There are concessions available in some special cases.

Scholarship & Grants

Foreign students studying Icelandic language & literature are granted annually, a few scholarships, at the University of Iceland  offered by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture.Whereas grants are  awarded on the basis of joint submission from student and professor, and approval from the respective faculty to post-graduates in research universities.
Applications of International Students

The deadline for international students (other than exchange students) to apply for undergraduate and graduate studies will be announced latter but may be 1 February 2017, for the 2017-2018 academic year.An on line application system will be operated from the beginning of December 2016 until 1 February 2017. Certified transcript of records and previous degree diploma (in hard copy) must have been received by the University no later than 15 February 2017. Nordic citizens are exempted and may apply for graduate studies until 15 April and for undergraduate studies until 5 June.

Undergraduate Studies

 The minimum requirement for admission to the University of Iceland is an Icelandic matriculation examination (stúdentspróf) or the equivalent level of study. 

Graduate Studies

Specific faculty rules apply regarding admission requirements for graduate studies at the master's and doctoral levels. Course Catalogue and website may be seen for specific rules.
Language
In general, teaching at the University of Iceland is in the Icelandic language. Only a limited number of programmes (mainly postgraduate) are offered entirely in English. Several faculties offer single courses taught in English Universities may be consulted to see the list of courses in English.But proof proficiency in English Language is to be provided by the students whose native language is not English.

  • , together with a copy of the front page of their passport.
  •  Some faculties also require certain other supporting documents, i.e. statement of purpose, CV and references.
  • Citizens of countries outside the EEA/EFTA (exempting the Faroe Islands and Greenland), applying for studies at the University of Iceland, are required to pay a fee of € 50 (ISK 8,000) for the handling and processing of their applications. The fee is charged as part of the on line application process and is payable by credit card only,VISA or Mastercard. The handling and processing fee is NOT refundable.
