Higher Education in Denmark
Secondary education usually takes two to four years and is attended by students between the ages of 15 and 20. Some education programs are academically oriented, the most common being the Gymnasium. The upper secondary education system includes a range of opportunities. Academic programs allow students to apply for entry to higher education. Vocational programs are aimed at direct entry to the labor market. The universities, colleges and academies ranked high in world ranking of educational institutions. Above all Denmark is a welfare state and has ranked 2nd Best in the "Quality of life" and "University for Engineering" in the world.
The higher education sector includes mostly below mentioned degrees programs:
- Artistic Higher Education Institutions research and/or artistically based Bachelor Degree 3 years (180 ECTS) Master Degree 2 years (120 ECTS) and Postgraduate Degree 3 years (180 ECTS)
- Universities research-based undergraduate Degree 3 years (180 ECTS) Master Degree 2 years (120 ECTS) 3 years (180 ECTS) 3 years and Postgraduate Degree 3 years (18OECTS)
- University Colleges offer Academy Profession Degree 2 years (120 ECTS) and Professional Bachelor Degrees 3-4 years (180-240 ECTS). Top-up-Degree 1½ year (90 ECTS) For students who have already completed an AP degree.
- Business Academies (short-cycle higher education institutions offering Academy Profession and joint Bachelor's degree 3½ year (220 ECTS).Top-up-Degree 1½ year (90 ECTS) For students who have already completed an AP degree
Adult education. The opportunities for lifelong learning in terms of adult education are many. They are offered at all levels. Individual courses are also offered under the Act on Open Education, either at college or university.

Admission Requirements
In Denmark, each institution is responsible for its own admissions. Requirements vary from program to program. Here is what you need to know about how and when to apply:
Non-Danish citizens who do not have a Danish entrance examination are eligible for admission if they have qualifications recognized as being comparable to Danish entrance qualifications.
Language Requirements
English-taught study programs
Applicants to English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate programs must prove English proficiency comparable to 'English B' in the Danish upper secondary school (gymnasium) and 'English A' in some programs. English language tests to prove the proficiency may include TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge ESOL examinations (CAE) etc. English Test B of Danish requires IELTS 6.5,TOEFL 550-583 and CAE (B) and English Test A of Danish requires IELTS 7.0,TOEFL 587-610 and CAE (A).
Note:
Applicants who are native English speakers are exempted from these test requirements. Also, applicants who can document English proficiency at an equivalent level may contact the institution's International Admission Office to determine if their English level is sufficient.
Danish-taught study programs
For admission into degree programs taught in Danish proof of proficiency in Danish by taking the test called ‘Danish as a Foreign Language(Danish Test 2,Danish Test 3 )
In this way you may enroll first in an English-taught undergraduate program and then continue your education in Danish at the graduate level once you have achieved the required Danish language skills.
Requirements for Bachelor studies
- An entrance examination comparable to a Danish upper secondary school certificate.
- Proof of proficiency in English.
Certain study programs have additional admission requirements. This could include:
- Subjects passed on a certain level. Danish education use levels A, B and C, A being the highest.
- Subjects passed with a certain minimum grade.
- The diploma in total passed with a certain minimum GPA
- Passed admission test/interview.
Requirements for postgraduate studies
- an internationally recognized Bachelor's degree of good standard or equivalent
- proof of proficiency in English (see above)
- proof of proficiency in Danish, if the program is taught in Danish (see above).
Requirements for PhD studies
For PhD a Master's degree or equivalent is generally needed. A four-year PhD program is offered to students who have completed a Bachelor’s qualification and one year of study at postgraduate level.
How and when to apply
Undergraduates
For undergraduate studies, the admission deadline is 15 March for courses starting in August or September. A few institutions have additional intakes in January or February. For those courses, the deadline is 1 September. The application forms are available from the institutions approximately two months prior to the deadline. Online application forms can also be found.
Postgraduates
For postgraduate studies, deadlines vary. We recommend that you contact the institution directly for details.
Tuition fees.
Higher education in Denmark is free for students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland. Similarly, if you are participating in an exchange program your studies in Denmark are free. You also do not pay for tuition if you at the time of application have a:
- Permanent residence permit.
- Temporary residence permit that can be upgraded to a permanent one.
- Residence permit as the accompanying child of a non-EU/EEA parent holding a residence permit based on employment.
All other students must pay tuition fees.
Annual tuition fees for full-degree students
USD 8,000-21,000 / Euro 6,000-16,000 (DKK 45,000-120,000). Note: for exact fees you should contact the institution in question.
Scholarships and grants
Most Danish institutions have bilateral agreements for mutual exchange of students, researchers and teachers. National and European programs offer scholarships for international students wishing to study in Denmark. Some grants and scholarships admissible to:
- Dedicated, top-tier students with an academic profile within the areas of natural, environmental and health sciences, engineering, technology and innovation
- Students enrolled at a Nordic or Baltic higher education institution.
- Erasmus-students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland study abroad as Exchanges Students in last 3-12 months part of their higher education in their home country.
- To Erasmus Mundus scheme EU/EEA and non-EU/EAA students to undertake specific Master's degree.
- American students in higher education wishing to study in Denmark under Fulbright scholarship .
- Student from Brazil or China who can pursue an education in a Danish university and a career at a Danish company either in Denmark, China or Brazil.
- Highly qualified exchange students and young researchers from European countries and from Russia, China, Japan, Israel and Egypt, under the Cultural Agreements, in studies of the Danish language and culture or other fields of study related to Denmark, such as design, architecture, environmental studies, and other related fields.
- Fund highly qualified full-degree students from non-EU/EEA countries and Switzerland who have been granted a time-limited residence permit in Denmark due to education.
- An international student under Danish State Educational Support (SU) who apply for equal status awarded to Danish residents.
Visa & Residence Permit.
A visa is issued for the purpose of a short stay of no more than 90 days in Denmark. The 90 days must be spent within a 180 day period in either Denmark or another Schengen country. Foreign nationals who are required a visa to enter Denmark and who intend to stay in Denmark for more than 3 months must apply for a residence permit prior to arriving in Denmark. Please note that if you apply for a residence permit and visa at the same time, your visa application will be turned down.
Where to file your application
You may apply for a visa at any authorized Danish mission in a country where you are staying legally on a permanent or temporary basis. This includes all Danish Embassies and certain consulates abroad.
